Brackenbury's Britain
in Nottingham
Join us on a tour of the “real England” to see not only the home country of the Mayflower Pilgrims, but to enjoy guided hiking in the “Peak District,” the first of England’s national parks. This holiday combines exploration of the culture and heritage of the country with some of its finest countryside, including a walk in Sherwood Forest, where some of the oaks are up to a thousand years old!
Do not be put off by the name, there are actually very few “peaks” in the Peak District! There will of course be some hills but the guided walks, chosen especially for us, will be manageable by any reasonably fit weekend walker. You’ll have a chance to relax after the walks in the luxurious hotels – some of which have fabulous spa facilities.
The tour is led by Richard Brackenbury, the owner of Brackenbury’s Britain, a company specializing in guided walks in England. The tour host is Taree McGee, a retired English teacher from the St. Louis area, who frequently leads tours with the Professional Tour Guides of St. Louis. She has hosted several European tours for Reformation Tours to England, France, and Italy.
The tour includes a visit to the stunning Chatsworth House and Gardens. It is believed that Jane Austen may have based her idea of Pemberley on Chatsworth House and written the novel while in Bakewell.

Day 1: Sunday, May 10, 2020: Depart
We will depart from the USA. Pre-tour nights can be arranged for early arrivals.
Day 2: Monday, May 11, 2020: Manchester, Retford
On arrival in Manchester Airport, we will transfer to the pre-tour hotel in Manchester and the morning is free to explore Manchester. Our tour director, Richard Brackenbury, will be there to greet everyone and welcome us to England. Once everyone has arrived, we will board our air-conditioned bus and transfer to “Ye Olde Bell” in the heart of “Mayflower Country” in North Nottinghamshire. A former coaching inn on the old Great North Road, this hotel has spa facilities to allow you to relax and settle in to start your English adventure. We will dine in our hotel this evening and a ½ bottle of wine, beer, or soft drinks are included. (IF/D)
Day 3: Tuesday, May 12, 2020: Pilgrim Villages
After a delicious breakfast, we will set out to explore some of the delightful villages nearby where many of the Separatists lived before they traveled to the Netherlands, and then on the Mayflower to America. The church of Babworth and villages of Scrooby and Austerfield all lie within a few miles. Not only will we visit the church where the early separatists worshipped under their minister, Richard Clyfton, we will see William Brewster’s home village and church at Scrooby. Five miles north takes us to St Helena’s, Austerfield, an ancient English church which houses the very font where William Bradford was baptized. It lies a few yards from the house in which he lived as a boy, which is now a private home. We will stop in a pub at lunchtime, where we can order off the menu. In the afternoon, we will visit Gainsborough Old Hall, a wonderful half-timbered medieval hall with an amazingly-well preserved kitchen and Great Hall. This was the home of the Hickman family, who is said to have allowed John Smyth, the famous separatist preacher to use its property to preach to the Separatists. We will return to our hotel for dinner. (D)
Day 4: Wednesday, May 13, 2020: Sherwood Forest, Lincoln
We will depart after breakfast and travel to the heart of Sherwood Forest. We’ll begin at the new visitor center, then walk on one of the many trails into the forest, where we’ll see some of the ancient oaks that are around a thousand years old. We’ll have lunch in England’s oldest pub, the “Trip to Jerusalem.” This afternoon, we will visit Holme Pierrepont Hall, Nottinghamshire’s oldest inhabited building on an exclusive private tour. After tea and cake, we will transfer to the Castle Hotel in Lincoln. The hotel is within walking distance of Lincoln Castle and its wonderful medieval cathedral, both of which sit high on a hill visible for miles around. This evening we will be free to dine in the restaurant of our choice. (B)
Day 5: Thursday, May 14, 2020: Lincoln
After breakfast, we will explore Lincoln Castle. We will be able to see a copy of the Magna Carta and watch an informative film. The castle also has a walkway around the walls, and two historic prisons. The chapel in the Victorian prison is quite unique! The rest of the day is at leisure. Lincoln has an exceptional shopping area, plus a very attractive street appropriately named “Steep Hill”. It has a one in seven (14%) gradient! In the early evening, we are invited to Evensong, where one of the country’s finest cathedral choirs will sing a liturgy unchanged since the days of Queen Elizabeth and King James I. (B)
Day 6: Friday, May 15, 2020: Peak District
After all that history, time for fresh air! We will have breakfast then travel about an hour and a half to the Peak District, where we will walk the grit stone edges of Curbar and Baslow, before dropping down to the Derwent Valley to reach one of England’s finest buildings, Chatsworth House. Gloriously situated, it is the home to the Duke and Duchess of Devonshire. After lunch in the Georgian courtyard, we will have an opportunity to explore the house and gardens, then transfer to Lose Hill Hotel and Spa, our home for the next 3 nights. (B/D)
Day 7: Saturday, May 16, 2020: Eyam, Lose Hill
We will have breakfast, then take a short coach journey to Eyam, another delightful hill village in the heart of the National Park. While in the village, we will hear the true story of how, in 1666, led by its Minister, the entire population cut itself off to prevent the plague from spreading to nearby cities. After a cup of coffee, the village will be the start of wonderful walk of around 7 miles. A relatively short sharp hill takes us on to moorland down to a wooded river valley before finishing at a traditional English pub set on top of a ridge. Here we will enjoy a traditional English fish and chip supper before returning to Lose Hill. If the weather is kind, this memorable walk will leave us with lasting memories of views of glorious English landscapes. (B/D)
Day 8: Sunday, May 17, 2020: Bakewell, Lose Hill
After breakfast, we will make our own traditional dessert in the place where the recipe was first developed hundreds of years ago in the town of Bakewell. The Bakewell Pudding consists of flaky pastry base, topped with jelly and an egg and almond filling. We will then take a very short drive to Haddon Hall. Because it managed to avoid being “improved” over the years, it still retains many features of its Tudor and mediaeval past. We will return to Lose Hill by mid-afternoon where we have the choice either of sitting and relaxing with wonderful views from its front lawn and public rooms or joining Richard on a walk in the surrounding countryside. We will have our farewell meal together this evening. (B/D)
Day 9: Monday, May 18, 2020: Return
We will depart after breakfast and return to Manchester. Post-tour travel can be arranged either through Reformation Tours or independently. (B)
