Highlights include:
Key: IF = In Flight Meals, B = Breakfast, L = Lunch, AT = Afternoon Tea, D = Dinner
Day 1: Thursday, May 28, 2020: Departure
We will leave Norfolk, VA for our overnight flights to London. (IF)
Day 2: Friday, May 29, 2020: Arrival, Windsor, Oxford
On arrival in Heathrow, we will board our bus and depart for Windsor for a visit to the castle, the largest inhabited castle in the world. We will visit the State Rooms and St. George’s Chapel. After our visit, we will continue on to Oxford and check in to the Randolph Hotel, our base for the entire tour. We will dine in the hotel this evening. (IF/D)
Day 3: Saturday, May 30, 2020: Oxford, The Kilns
After a relaxed breakfast, we will have a guided walking tour of this ancient university town including a visit to Christ Church College. Christ Church is the essential place to visit in Oxford. Two of its famous landmarks, Tom Tower, by Christopher Wren, and Oxford’s Cathedral spire, contribute to the city’s celebrated skyline. Many famous writers and poets are also associated with the college, including Lewis Carroll, W.H. Auden, and John Locke.
This afternoon we will visit C. S. Lewis’ home, The Kilns (subject to availability.) C. S. Lewis lived in the Kilns in Headington with his brother and we will tour his home. This is now the C. S. Lewis Study Centre at The Kilns and is a place of Christian hospitality, study, reflection, and learned conversation between Christian scholars, artists, and laity the world over. We will also visit Holy Trinity Church nearby where the Lewis brothers worshipped for over 30 years. Inside the church, designed by the celebrated architect Sir George Gilbert Scott, we will see the Narnia Window. (B)
Day 4: Sunday, May 31, 2020: Buscot Park, Oxford
The morning will be at leisure to allow time to attend church. In the early afternoon, we will have a tour of Buscot Park, located near the town of Faringdon. Buscot Park is the family home of Lord Faringdon, who looks after the property on behalf of the National Trust, as well as the family collection of pictures, furniture, ceramics, and objets d’art, known as the Faringdon Collection, which is displayed in the house. We will return to Oxford and attend Evensong at 6 PM, followed by dinner at the Trout Pub. (B/D)
Day 5: Monday, June 1, 2020: Stonehenge, Bath, Oxford
Today’s day trip will begin with a visit to Stonehenge. Lying prominently on the flat Salisbury plains, Stonehenge is Britain’s (possibly Europe’s) most important prehistoric monument. The standing stones are anywhere between three and four thousand years old, their purpose now largely obscured by time. It is known that some of the stones were brought in from as far away as Wales. We will continue on to Bath, where we will visit the Crescent, the Jane Austen Museum, and the Roman Baths. We’ll end our tour with Afternoon Cream Tea in the Pump Rooms. (B/AT)
Day 6: Tuesday, June 2, 2020: Stratford-upon-Avon, Bibury, Oxford
This morning we will travel up to Stratford-upon-Avon, the town where Shakespeare was born in 1564. The guided tour will include his Birthplace in the heart of the old town, as well as the Church of the Holy Trinity, where Shakespeare’s baptism and burial are recorded, and where he and his family are buried. There will be free time afterward to purchase lunch and for independent shopping and sightseeing. Tickets can be arranged for a matinee if there’s a suitable one on offer. We will then visit Bibury, a charming, typically Cotswold village. Bibury was once described by William Morris as “the most beautiful village in England.” While here we will also see the much-photographed Arlington Row cottages, which are quintessentially Cotswolds! (B)
Day 7: Wednesday, June 3, 2020: Oxford
Today will be a relaxing morning in Oxford. Options will include visits to Oxford Colleges, the Ashmolean Museum, Botanical Gardens, Natural History Museum, Pitt Rivers, etc. In the afternoon, we will have a C. S. Lewis-themed walking tour including an inside visit to Magdalen College, Addison’s Walk, and the Bodleian Library. Dinner will be in the Eagle and Child Pub. (B/D)
Day 8: Thursday, June 4, 2020: Blenheim Palace, Oxford
Blenheim Palace is the stately home of the Dukes of Marlborough and birthplace of Sir Winston Churchill. The magnificent palace was the masterpiece of John Vanbrugh and the extensive grounds were landscaped by ‘Capability Brown.’ We will tour the Palace, Park, and Gardens at our leisure. We will dine together in our hotel this evening. (B/D)
