We’ll even take a boat cruise on Loch Ness and see if we can spot Nessie. Join us as we learn about our Presbyterian roots, connect with other Christians in Scotland and have an adventure as part of the MPPC family.
Key: IF = In Flight Meals, B= Breakfast, D = Dinner
Day 1: Wednesday, June 7, 2017: Departure
We will depart from Charleston today on our international flights to Edinburgh, Scotland. (IF)
Day 2: Thursday, June 8, 2017: Edinburgh
On arrival in Edinburgh, we will meet our Scottish guides and board our air-conditioned bus. We will begin our time in Scotland with a bus orientation tour of Edinburgh, viewing the sites that we will see in more detail during the tour. We will visit the royal palace of Holyrood where in 1561 John Knox had discussions about Christianity with Mary Queen of Scots. We will then check-in to our hotel and the afternoon is at leisure to explore. Our Welcome Dinner is at the Merchant’s Restaurant this evening, which serves wonderful Scottish cuisine. (B/D)
Day 3: Friday, June 9, 2017: Edinburgh, Stirling
After a relaxed breakfast, our tour guides will take us on a Reformation-themed walking tour including the John Knox House, Greyfriar’s Church, Magdalene Chapel and the Royal Mile. Our guide will tell us about the Reformation in Edinburgh: John Knox, the Covenanters and how the saints stood strong for Jesus and true doctrine. Our tour of Edinburgh Castle will include tiny St. Margaret’s Chapel, which dates back to the 1100s. We will attend the noon service in St. Giles Cathedral. The rest of the day is at leisure, before we travel to Stirling. We can dine in the restaurant of our choice this evening. (B)
Day 4: Saturday, June 10, 2017: Stirling, Perth
We will have breakfast in the hotel, then tour the magnificent Stirling Castle, where James VI was educated by Scottish Reformer George Buchanan. Nearby is the Church of the Holy Rude, once a royal cathedral where John Knox preached for James VI baptism in 1566. We will continue on to Perth and check in to our hotel, which is just across the river from Kinnoull Parish Church. This evening we will dine with friends from the Kinnoull congregation. (B/D)
Day 5: Sunday, June 11, 2017: Perth
We will enjoy a hearty Scottish breakfast at our hotel, before attending the 10:30 AM Church service in Kinnoull Parish Church, where the choir will perform. The rest of the day is at leisure. (B)
Day 6: Monday, June 12, 2017: St. Andrews, Perth
Today’s day trip is to St. Andrews, a spiritual center in Scotland for centuries. During the Reformation, St. Andrews University was third in significance after Oxford and Cambridge. In the now ruined castle, we will see the Bottle Dungeon where George Wishart was imprisoned before being burned at the stake, and pause at his martyrdom site, also remembering fellow martyr Patrick Hamilton. St. Andrews Cathedral was once the largest church in Scotland, but fell into ruin after John Knox’s sermon, which was inspired by Wishart’s martyrdom. We’ll see a monument to Robert the Bruce, the first king to unite the Scottish people and the wide sandy beach made famous in the film Chariots of Fire. Scotland is famous for its whisky and we will take a tour of Kingsbarns Distillery, with the opportunity to taste a sample. We will return to Perth in the late afternoon. (B/D)
Day 7: Tuesday, June 13, 2017: Culloden, Inverness
On our way north we will tour Blair Castle, which dates back to 1269. Unique amongst Scottish castles, the story told here will take you from a visit by Mary Queen of Scots to the Civil War, and from the Jacobite cause to the disaster of Culloden following Bonnie Prince Charlie’s own stay in the castle. We will end the tour with a light lunch of sandwiches and cake. In the afternoon we will tour the Culloden battlefield site, where the last hand-to-hand battle was fought on British soil. The battle only lasted one hour, but had a huge impact on the Highlands. We will check-in to our Guest House and the evening is free to dine in the restaurant of our choice. (B/L)
Day 8: Wednesday, June 14, 2017: Loch Ness, Inverness
This morning we will drive through Inverness and take a one hour cruise on Loch Ness. At the end of our cruise, we will tour Urquhart Castle. Steeped in national heritage and history, the Trossachs is home to some of the most influential and quintessentially Scottish icons of all time such as Rob Roy MacGregor and Sir Walter Scott. This evening we will have dinner at a pub called Hootananny, with traditional Scottish music. (B/D)
Day 9: Thursday, June 15, 2017: Glencoe, Glasgow
On our way south, we will spend some time in Glencoe, where the massacre took place on February 13, 1692. The visitor center includes a 15 minute video presentation explaining what led up to the sad events. In the afternoon we will enjoy the beautiful scenery of Loch Lomond, before ending the day in Glasgow. The rest of the day is at leisure to explore Glasgow. (B)
Day 10: Friday, June 16, 2017: Glasgow
We will have a guided tour of Glasgow this morning, including a visit to a kilt maker. We will visit St. Mungo’s Cathedral, which was founded by David I on the site of an earlier church. In the chapter house we will see the graves of nine Covenanters who lost their lives in 1645 for being Presbyterian. The afternoon is free to relax, shop, or maybe browse the St. Mungo Museum of Religious Life and Art. Our Farewell Meal will be at a restaurant serving traditional Scottish food. (B/D)
Day 11: Saturday, June 17, 2017: Return
We will transfer to the airport this morning, to return to the USA. (B/IF)
