The history of the Oberammergau Passion Play dates back to the middle of the Thirty Years War. In 1633, after months of suffering from the Bubonic Plague, the people of Oberammergau took a vow to perform the “Play of the Suffering, Dying and Resurrection of our Lord Jesus Christ” every ten years if they were spared. Miraculously from that point on they all survived and true to their promise, the first performance was in 1634. This simple performance was held in a meadow and acted by the villagers. After 1674 they decided to change the date, so as to fall every ten years beginning in 1680. The only time it was not performed was during World War II.
This tour not only includes fantastic seats for the Play, but also these highlights:

Day 4: Tuesday, June 21, 2022: Wittenberg
This morning our local guide will take us on a tour of Lutherstadt Wittenberg. It was here in 1517 that Martin Luther nailed his famous 95 Theses to the door of Castle Church (Schlosskirche). Although the original doors were destroyed in the Seven Years War, we can see Luther’s texts cast in bronze on the new doors. We will visit St. Mary’s Church where Luther regularly preached and visit the Old Latin School next door. Luther’s former home, the Lutherhalle, is now a Reformation Museum and we will see where he lived with his family, as well as some of Luther’s very own personal library, rare manuscripts, and early Bibles. We will arrange for a time of fellowship today, either in the Old Lutheran School, or with the Wittenberg English Ministry. The rest of the day will be free to explore independently, with coupons for free admission to museums and attractions. (B)
Day 5: Wednesday, June 22, 2022: Eisleben, Erfurt
This morning we will drive to Eisleben, where Luther was born and also where he died. It is sometimes referred to as his Bethlehem and Jerusalem. We will visit both of these homes with our guide, as well as St. Anne’s, an old miner’s church famous for the Biblical Scenes hewn in stone. We will also visit St. Peter and St. Paul Church where Luther was baptized, and St. Andrews, where he preached his last sermon. In the afternoon, we will continue on to Erfurt. Our local guide will take us on a tour including St. Mary’s Cathedral, St. Severin’s Church and the famous Merchant’s Bridge. We will also tour the Augustinian Monastery where Luther became a monk on July 17, 1505. We will be able to see his monastic quarters, including one cell furnished to look as it would have when he lived there. (B/D)
Day 6: Thursday, June 23, 2022: Eisenach, Erfurt
Today’s day trip will be to nearby Eisenach. In 1521, while fleeing from the wrath of the Pope, Luther took refuge in the Wartburg Castle after a fake kidnapping staged by his friend and protector, Frederick the Wise. We will tour the Wartburg and see where Luther finished translating the New Testament into German in just eleven weeks. In the afternoon, we will have free time in Eisenach. Attractions include the Luther House, St. George’s Church and the Bach House. (B)
Day 7: Friday, June 24, 2022: Worms, Heidelberg
We will journey south today to Worms, where we will tour the Cathedral, followed by the site of Luther’s Worms Debates (Diet of Worms), now a park, with a plaque commemorating Luther’s brave stand for faith and truth in 1521. We will have a photo stop at the stunning Reformation Monument, followed by a visit to the Church of the Holy Trinity. Tonight’s dinner will be in a winery, then we will check in to our hotel in the Heidelberg area. (B/D)
Day 8: Saturday, June 25, 2022: Heidelberg, Strasbourg
This morning we will visit Heidelberg Castle which boasts the world’s largest wine barrel, a fascinating history and a stunning view. Pastor Stager will teach on the Heidelberg Confession, which was drafted by Zacharius Ursinus (age 28) and Caspar Olevianus (age 26). We will then travel into France to Strasbourg, referred to as the “City of Hope” and “Refuge of the Righteous” by the Anabaptists. This is where John Calvin wrote his first edition of Systematic Theology, and Martin Bucer developed influential protestant doctrines and practices that redefined liturgy. We will have a stroll around the city center and view the Cathedral of Strasbourg, St. Thomas’s Church, and the charming “La Petite France” quarter. (B/D)
Day 9: Sunday, June 26, 2022: Strasbourg, Colmar
This morning we will have a guided walking tour with a local French Reformation scholar, followed by a group lunch. In the afternoon, there will be an optional excursion to explore charming Colmar. This town escaped damage during the war and has numerous picturesque half-timbered houses. This was the hometown of Frederic Bartholdi (creator of the Statue of Liberty) and the town includes a small museum. A highlight is the Isenheim Altarpiece by Gruenewald. (B/L)
Day 10: Monday, June 27, 2022: Constance, Oberammergau
This morning we will drive through the Black Forest to Constance. It was here that pre-Reformer Jan Hus was martyred.
