Members of Grace Valley Christian Church are invited to join Reverend Buddingh, Dr. Spencer, and Mr. Roby on a private 16-day tour of Europe. Beginning in Prague in the Czech Republic, you will see sites associated with Jan Hus and attend an English-speaking church service. After crossing over into Germany, you will experience the art and music cities of Dresden and Leipzig, and hear about the “Pray for Peace Christians” during the Cold War.
You will visit many key sites associated with Martin Luther in Wittenberg, Erfurt, Eisenach, and Worms. He spent several weeks in hiding in Wartburg Castle and you’ll be staying in the 5-star hotel right next to the castle. In the Rhine region, you’ll cruise down the Rhine, take a tour of the Gutenberg Museum, and see the site of the Diet of Worms. In Heidelberg there is another opportunity to meet local believers, and hear more about the history of the Heidelberg Catechism. After traveling through the Black Forest, you will see the stone marking the site of Hus’ martyrdom. In Switzerland you’ll learn about the history of Zwingli, Calvin, and the Anabaptists. The Reformation Wall in Geneva is a fitting conclusion to this Reformation overview tour.

Day 4: Sunday, July 17, 2022: Prague
This morning we will have the opportunity to worship with other English-speaking believers in Prague or we will start our day with a locally guided walking tour of Hradčany, the largest castle complex in the world. Besides Prague Castle, the grounds also include St. Vitus Cathedral and the Golden Lane, a collection of small cottages from the 16th century. After crossing the famous Charles Bridge, we will arrive at Wenceslas Square, a wide boulevard that is dominated by the National Museum and a statue of Saint Wenceslas. During free time, we can purchase some Czech crystal or garnet jewelry, visit one of the many fine museums or simply sample some Czech delicacies near the city center. This evening we will enjoy a typical Czech meal accompanied by traditional folk entertainment. (B/D)
Day 5: Monday, July 18, 2022: Dresden, Leipzig
This morning we will drive to Dresden where we will have free time to attend the noon service at the recently restored Frauenkirche. After free time to buy lunch, we will have time to look around the city. Dresden’s highlights include the magnificent palatial buildings around the Theaterplatz, the Kreuzkirche, and the Brühl Terraces, and the many art treasures at the state museums. Day 6: Tuesday, July 19, 2022: Leipzig
Today we will explore one of Europe’s flourishing trade and commercial centers during the Middle Ages which became the center of resistance to Communist rule a quarter century ago. Here we will have the privilege of visiting the Nikolaikirche (St. Nicholas Church), the home of the faithful “Pray for Peace” Christians, and the powerful force that transformed Germany’s East and West. In 1989, thousands of East Germans gathered by candlelight in this church to form human rights and pro-democracy demonstrations that led to the destruction of the infamous Berlin Wall and the dissolution of East Germany. Another Leipzig highlight will be our visit to Thomaskirche (St. Thomas Church), where Luther preached and Johann Sebastian Bach performed and directed the famous St. Thomas Boys choir. This evening will be free and concert tickets can be arranged. (B)
Day 7: Wednesday, July 20, 2022: Wittenberg
We will travel to Lutherstadt Wittenberg this morning. It was here in 1517 that Martin Luther nailed his famous 95 Theses and Melanchthon helped forge Reformation Theology and the Cranachs painted their famous portraits of Luther. We will spend time in the Lutherhalle (Luther House) Museum, where Luther lived first as a monk, then later with his wife and children. The tour will also include Castle Church, Stadtkirche St. Marien (St. Mary’s church) where Luther preached and where his children were baptized, and the Luther Oak where he burned the edict from Rome, condemning him as a “heretic.” After a special service with the Wittenberg English Ministry, we will have a free evening, or the opportunity to have a meal with local Christians (meal cost not included). (B)
Day 8: Thursday, July 21, 2022: Erfurt, Eisenach
After breakfast, we will travel to Erfurt, where we will have free time for lunch. Our local guide will take us on a walking tour, including St. Mary’s Cathedral, the Church of St. Severus, and the famous Merchant’s Bridge. We will end the tour at the Augustinian Monastery where Luther became a monk on July 17, 1505. We will be able to see his monastic quarters, including one cell furnished to look as it would have when he lived there. At the end of the tour we will have a group worship service in the chapel. We will continue on to Eisenach and check in to our hotel next to the Wartburg Castle. After dinner we will have an after-hours reception in the Bach House, with a demonstration of period instruments. (B/D)
Day 9: Friday, July 22, 2022: Eisenach, Mainz
This morning we will be able to enjoy Wartburg Castle before the crowds arrive, as our hotel is right next to it. In 1521, while fleeing from the wrath of the Pope, Luther took refuge in the Wartburg Castle after a fake kidnapping staged by his friend and protector, Frederick the Wise. We will take a tour and see where Luther finished translating the New Testament into German in just eleven weeks. We will have a group lunch in our hotel, then we will travel down to Mainz and visit the Gutenberg Museum. (B/L)
Day 10: Saturday, July 23, 2022: Mainz, Worms, Heidelberg
What better way to start the day than with a Rhine cruise! We’ll board the boat and sail past magnificent castles and the famous Loreley rock. From there we will drive to Worms, where we will tour the Cathedral, followed by the site of Luther’s Worms Debates (Diet of Worms), now a park, with a plaque commemorating Luther’s brave stand for faith and truth in 1521. We will dine together this evening. (B/D)
Day 12: Monday, July 25, 2022: Constance, Zurich
We will travel through the scenic Black Forest to Constance, where we will see the stone which marks the spot where the pre-Reformer Jan Hus was martyred. We will also see the Cathedral where some of the trials were held. Crossing over into Switzerland, we’ll dine in an authentic Swiss restaurant. (B/D)
Day 13: Tuesday, July 26, 2022: Zurich
This morning our Zurich guide will take us on a walking tour to learn about Zwingli and the Anabaptists on a tour of the key Reformation sites.
