You are invited to experience the central truths of salvation itself on a tour to Germany in summer 2022 which will feature both the Oberammergau Passion Play and sites associated with Luther’s Reformation.
Jesus’ death on the cross and resurrection, which provide for our redemption, are the most important events in all of history. Jesus paid the price for our redemption. Martin Luther re-focused the church’s attention on this in the Reformation. Redemption and Reformation—this tour encompasses both. See the story of salvation unfold before your own eyes at the Oberammergau Passion Play and also stand on the sites where the truth of salvation by grace through faith was clarified and purified by Luther in the Reformation.
When you join us on this trip, we will enjoy guided tours at prominent Reformation sites, including Wittenberg, Eisleben (where Luther was born and died), Eisenach and the Wartburg Castle, Erfurt, Worms, and Augsburg among others. We will also visit Leipzig, where J.S. Bach set the truths of Redemption and the Reformation to timeless music. In addition to the guided tours, our schedule will allow for personal time to explore these sites and soak up the culture. The main focus of this tour is to witness the Passion Play, which has been performed in Oberammergau every 10 years since the Middle Ages. In addition to the sights and sounds of architecture, art, and music, the trip will also be filled with friends, fellowship, and lots of good food and fun. Join in!

We will depart from the USA. Group flights can be arranged from St. Louis. Reformation Tours can also arrange pre-tour nights in Berlin for anyone who wishes to travel before the tour begins. Click here for some ideas of things to do in Berlin. (IF)
Day 2: Wednesday, June 29, 2022: Berlin, Wittenberg
Welcome to Germany! On arrival in Berlin, travelers will transfer to the pre-tour hotel. After time to explore, purchase lunch, and shop, we will gather back at the hotel to begin the tour (time will be confirmed once we know all the flight arrival times.) We will start our Reformation Tour with a panoramic sightseeing tour of the reunified German capital, highlighting the Reichstag (parliament building), the Kaiser Wilhelm Memorial Church, the refurbished city center and Gendarnmenmarkt. We will also see Alexanderplatz, the famous boulevard “Unter den Linden”, and the Berlin Cathedral. We will continue to Lutherstadt-Wittenberg and check in our hotel. We will dine in our hotel this evening. (B/D)
Day 3: Thursday, June 30, 2022: Wittenberg
This morning our local guide will take us on a tour of Lutherstadt Wittenberg. It was here in 1517 that Martin Luther nailed his famous 95 Theses to the door of Castle Church (Schlosskirche). Although the original doors were destroyed in the Seven Years War, we can see Luther’s texts cast in bronze on the new doors. We will visit St. Mary’s Church where Luther regularly preached and visit the Old Latin School next door. Luther’s former home, the Lutherhalle, is now a Reformation Museum and we will see where he lived with his family, as well as some of Luther’s very own personal library, rare manuscripts, and early Bibles. We will arrange for a time of fellowship today, either in the Old Lutheran School, or with the Wittenberg English Ministry. The rest of the day will be free to explore independently. (B)
Day 4: Friday, July 1, 2022: Eisleben, Leipzig
This morning we drive to Eisleben, where Luther was born and also where he died. It is sometimes referred to as his Bethlehem and Jerusalem. We’ll visit both these homes with our guide, as well as St. Anne’s, an old miner’s church famous for the Biblical Scenes hewn in stone. We will also visit St. Peter and St. Paul Church where Luther was baptized, and St. Andrews, where he preached his last sermon. In the afternoon, we will continue on to Leipzig. Luther was here more than once, but Leipzig is really the town of Johann Sebastian Bach. Bach served as cantor in St. Thomas Church for 27 years. We will attend the motet concert at 6 PM this evening in St. Thomas’, then dine in our hotel. (B/D)
Day 5: Saturday, July 2, 2022: Leipzig
Today we will explore one of Europe’s flourishing trade and commercial centers during the Middle Ages which became the center of resistance to Communist rule a quarter century ago. Here we have the privilege of visiting the Nikolaikirche (St. Nicholas Church), the home of the faithful “Pray for Peace” Christians, and the powerful force that transformed Germany’s East and West. In 1989, thousands of East Germans gathered by candlelight in this church to form human rights and pro-democracy demonstrations that led to the destruction of the infamous Berlin Wall and the dissolution of East Germany. Another Leipzig highlight is our visit to Thomaskirche (St. Thomas Church), where Luther preached and Johann Sebastian Bach performed and directed the famous St. Thomas Boys choir. This evening will be free and concert tickets can be arranged (B).
Day 6: Sunday, July 3, 2022: Erfurt, Eisenach
After breakfast, we attend the Sunday morning service at St. Thomas’, then travel to Erfurt. In the afternoon our local guide will take us on a tour including St. Mary’s Cathedral, St. Severin’s Church and the famous Merchant’s Bridge. We will also tour the Augustinian Monastery where Luther became a monk on July 17, 1505. We will be able to see his monastic quarters, including one cell furnished to look as it would have when he lived there. After the tour we will continue on to Eisenach and check into our hotel. We will have fun dinner tonight in a medieval-style restaurant featuring foods from Luther’s time. (B/D)
Day 7: Monday, July 4, 2022: Eisenach
In 1521, while fleeing from the wrath of the Pope, Luther took refuge in the Wartburg Castle after a fake kidnapping staged by his friend and protector, Frederick the Wise. We will tour the Wartburg and see where Luther finished translating the New Testament into German in just eleven weeks. We will end the tour with a group lunch. In the afternoon we will have a city tour, then enjoy free time before a special after-hours evening at the Bach House. (B/D)
Day 8: Tuesday, July 5, 2022: Worms, Rothenburg
We will journey south today to Worms, where we will visit the site of the Diet of Worms, now a park, with a plaque commemorating Luther’s brave stand for faith and truth. We’ll have a photo stop at the stunning Reformation Monument. We will visit Worms Cathedral, then continue on to medieval Rothenburg. The rest of the day will be at leisure to relax or join the Night Watchman on his nightly tour. (B/L)
Day 9: Wednesday, July 6, 2022: Augsburg, Neuschwanstein, Oberammergau
We will start our day by travelling down the fabled “Romantic Road,” a famous and popular tourist route, displaying a rich and varied cultural landscape, through the Franconian wine country to Bavaria. We will pass small historic villages full of their original charm on our way to Augsburg, another German Reformation city. We will learn from our expert guide about the Augsburg Confession and the 1555 Peace of Augsburg while we tour St. Anne’s Church. We will then continue on to King Ludwig’s Neuschwanstein Castle. After time to explore this fairytale castle, we will finish our day with our arrival in the Oberammergau area. We will check in to our hotel and have a delicious dinner. (B/D)
Day 10: Thursday, July 7, 2022: Oberammergau
The morning is free to stroll around Oberammergau before eating lunch and heading to the Passion Play. The seven-hour performance is truly a moving experience as we witness the passion of Jesus, recalling how He gave His life so that we might be forgiven. Gathered together with Christians from around the globe, this once-a-decade play is an unforgettable experience. (B/L/D)
Day 11: Friday, July 8, 2022: Munich
After a leisurely breakfast, we will drive up to Munich. In the afternoon we will have a guided walking tour of Munich, ending with a fun meal at the Hofbrauhaus. (B/D)
Day 12: Saturday, July 9, 2022: Return
We will leave this morning and drive to Munich Airport for our flight home. Click here for some ideas of things to do in Munich if you’re staying longer. (B)
