You are invited to join Dr. Jonathan Wheatley on a 15-day study tour of Tyndale sites in England, Germany, and Belgium. As we visit these key locations, we will discuss the significance of each to the writing and publication of William Tyndale’s English New Testament in 1526.
The recommended pre-tour reading will enable participants to fully immerse themselves in the study tour experience. This tour is particularly suitable for those who would like to lead their own Tyndale Study Tour in 2026 on the 500th anniversary of the Tyndale New Testament.
Jonathan Wheatley lives in Maryville, Tennessee, with his wife, Kim. He is a husband, father, and grandfather. He was born in England and emigrated to the US when he was a teenager. He came to know the Lord shortly after coming to the US and surrendered to the ministry in his early twenties. Jonathan received his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Open Bible College in Millbrook, Alabama, his Bachelor of Arts from Maryville College, Maryville, Tennessee, and his Doctor of Theology from Open Bible College International. As a result of his studies, Jonathan’s love of the Bible and classic works on theology grew and so did his library. He began collecting rare Bible leaves and Bibles that were beneficial to his studies and history of the English Bible.
Jonathan has taught Church History at the College level and is the author of two books: “Unique Words of the King James Bible”; and “One Principal Good One: The King James Bible”. He is also a Curator at the Tennessee Bible Museum in Pigeon Forge, TN. He currently serves as associate pastor of Grace Baptist Church of Etowah, Tennessee.

Day 8: Monday, June 9, 2025: London
We will have a Tyndale- focused walk this morning from Holborn to the Tower of London, with various stops along the way associated with Tyndale or places he would have been familiar with. Tyndale preached in St. Dunstan-in-the-West (not the current building) and two years after his death, the print stop of Robert Redman, next door to this church, printed the complete Bible in English. He would have been familiar with St. Sepulchre without Newgate, which mostly survived the Great Fire of London in 1686. Behind St. Paul’s is St. Paul’s Cross where Bibles were burned. St. Paul’s library has a copy of the 1526 Worms edition of Tyndale’s New Testament. On Ironmonger Lane we will see the site of Tyndale’s ordination in 1515. The Tower of London has been standing since Medieval times. In Lambeth Palace we can view the Lollards’ Prison. It’s thought that Tyndale registered at the university on May 27, 1524. Although he appreciated Luther’s teaching, he denied being “confederatt with Luther”. At that time there were many English exiles in Wittenberg, many of whom wanted to study under Melanchthon as well. The evening is at leisure. (B)

We will enjoy seeing the vineyards and castles from a boat on the Rhine River. After lunch we will travel to nearby Worms, where Luther and Tyndale had works published. It was here that Tyndale realized that printing the books in the smaller octavo size made them easier to disguise. We will return to Mainz and tour the Gutenberg Museum. Without the invention of movable type, Tyndale’s work could not have been distributed so quickly. We will return to Darmstadt for a free evening.(B)
Day 12: Friday, June 13, 2025: Cologne, Antwerp
Tyndale was first sited in Cologne in Spring 1525, where the printer Peter Quentel was printing the first sheets of his English New Testament. Goods could be shipped directly from Cologne to the Steelyard in London, but it was a very Catholic city. William Roye and Tyndale had to escape to Worms, when the authorities found out about their printing activities. Tyndale spent some time in Antwerp and purposely separated himself from Roye. This evening we will dine together. (B/D)
Day 13: Saturday, June 14, 2025: Antwerp
Tyndale stayed for 9 months in the home of Thomas Poyntz and he was familiar with many sites in Antwerp, including The Oude Beurs, the stock exchange of the time. We will visit the Plantin-Moretus Museum which contains the world’s two oldest extant printing presses. Antwerp was the commercial capital of Christendom and an ideal base for exporting printed Bibles. The rest of the day is at leisure. (B)
Day 14: Sunday, June 15, 2025: Vilvoorde, Anderlecht, Brussels
Tyndale was arrested in Antwerp on April 21, 1535 and imprisoned in the castle of Vilvoorde for 501 days. We will visit the Tyndale Museum in Vilvoorde and see the Tyndale Monument nearby. The Erasmus House in Anderlecht has been restored to the way it would have looked in 1521 when Erasmus stayed for a few months. We will end the day in Brussels. (B/D)
