Venice at Night
Oberammergau Passion Play
You are invited on a 12-day tour from Rome to Munich, including the Oberammergau Passion Play. This incredible retelling of the life of Christ dates back to the middle of the Thirty Years War. In 1633, after months of suffering from the Bubonic Plague, the people of Oberammergau took a vow to perform the “Play of the Suffering, Dying and Resurrection of our Lord Jesus Christ” every ten years if they were spared. The 2020 performances were postponed due to Covid, so 2022 will be another celebration of life after a pandemic.
Our tour hosts, Rev. Jason and Sandra Steele, have served in ministry for over 20 years. Sandra is an inactive attorney who has homeschooled their two daughters. Pastor Jason is an Evangelical Presbyterian Church minister with a congregation in Owosso, MI. He often teaches classes to his congregation on church history and is known to preach first person sermons as various church reformers. The Steeles enjoyed hosting our Reformation Jubilee Tour in May 2017, and they are excited to host, learn and laugh together with you on this historical adventure.

Day 3: Sunday, June 19, 2022: Rome
We will begin today at the Scala Sancta (Holy Stairs) which were reputedly brought to Rome from Jerusalem by St. Helena in the fourth century. According to tradition, the Holy Stairs are the steps leading up to the praetorium of Pontius Pilate on which Jesus Christ stepped on his way to trial during his Passion. Martin Luther climbed these steps when he visited Rome. We pause and think of Christ appearing before Pilate and the Passion of Christ. Afterwards we will be off to explore ancient Rome with a walking tour which will include an inside visit to the Colosseum and the Capitoline Hill areas of Rome. We will stroll through the Roman Forum with time at Mamertine Prison to reflect on Paul’s time spent in Rome. We will also see San Pietro in Vincoli Church with Michelangelo’s Moses. This evening we will learn how to make pizza at the Restaurante Terme del Colosseo. (B/D)
Day 4: Monday, June 20, 2022: Rome
Today will include a visit to the Vatican City and St. Peter’s Cathedral, home of the Roman Catholic Church and the largest building in Christianity. Also included will be a visit to the Vatican Museums and the Sistine Chapel where we will ponder Michelangelo’s interpretation of Christianity. The rest of the day will be at leisure. Afternoon optional excursions will include the Roman catacombs, the Borghese Gallery and Museum, or a food and wine evening. (B)

We will dine in our hotel this evening. (B/D)

We will dine in our hotel in Mestre. (B/D)
Day 8: Friday, June 24, 2022: Venice
We will begin our full-day in Venice with a guided tour excursion to St. Mark’s Square, including the Doge’s Palace & St Mark’s Basilica, and a cruise along the serpentine Canale Grande. There is time in the afternoon to explore and shop in the famous market area around the Rialto Bridge or to enjoy a coffee and some people-watching at St. Mark’s Square.
