Linsenmeyer Cousins, here is the tour of a lifetime, part 2. We went to Germany and met our cousins in 2010 and it was the greatest time ever! The next trip is planned for 2019, including seeing our cousins again and doing some sightseeing to boot! I hope you will come with us in June 2019 for the trip of a lifetime Take 2!
Highlights of the trip:
Key: IF = In Flight Meals, B = Breakfast, L = Lunch, D = Dinner
Day 1: Saturday, June 15, 2019: Departure
Our journey will begin with our flight from Chicago to Munich, Germany. (IF)
Day 2: Sunday, June 16, 2019: Dinkelsbühl
On arrival in Munich, the city of “Gemütlichkeit” we will meet our tour guide who will escort us to our waiting motor coach for the drive to Dinkelsbühl as we reconnect with our family roots. This evening we’ll have a wonderful reunion with German cousins at the Hotel Blauer Hecht, where we will stay for three nights. (B/D)
Day 3: Monday, June 17, 2019: Dinkelsbühl, Schopflohe
Today, we will have a full day to enjoy time in the Dinkelsbühl area. Dinkelsbühl is one of the three 1,000-year-old cities in Germany that is located on the Roman Highway. The old part of the city is still surrounded by ramparts and moats dating back to 928. The most important structure of the city is the St. George Church that was built in 1448-1499. While we do not know of any relatives living in the city, this is where our forefathers paid their taxes and did much of their buying. In the afternoon, we’ll visit Schopflohe, the birthplace of Andrew Linsenmeyer. There are many people with this name living in the village today. Part of our adventure will be to establish to which of these Linsenmeyers we are directly related. We may be able to have refreshments in the Linsenmeyer Guest House and view the cemetery with many names familiar to us. (B/D)
Day 4: Tuesday, June 18, 2019: Veitswind, Weidelbach
Veitswind is a very small village of six homes, one of which was the home of Andrew and Carolina, before they came to America. The family living in the home today, whom we will visit, are descendants of the man who purchased it from Andrew. A little further down the valley is the village of Weidelbach. This village has the church and school where the family worshiped and began their formal education. We will be able to see school records, baptism and confirmation records of several of Andrew’s children. (B/D)
Day 5: Wednesday, June 19, 2019: Harburg, Donauwörth, Augsburg
This morning we will visit the home of Karl and Waltrout Linsenmeyer in Harburg, where we will view the 11th century castle, one of the oldest castle fortifications in Germany. We will then continue to Donauwörth to visit our cousin Hans-Martin Linsenmeyer. He will take us to the Monastery of the Holy Cross, built in the 11th century to house an alleged piece of the original cross acquired during the Crusades. We will end the day with dinner in our hotel in Augsburg. (B/D)
Day 6: Thursday, June 20, 2019: Kissing, Augsburg
After breakfast, we will drive to the Der Friedhofswegweiser Cemetery to see where Leonard Linsenmeyer the twin was buried. In Kissing, we will see the house where he lived and Gunter and Ursula Linsenmeyer’s home. We will have a guided tour of Augsburg, including St. Anne’s Church, where Luther and Cajetan met in 1518. We will also see the Fuggerei, which was built for citizens in need. The complex includes homes, its own church, town walls and gates which are closed at night for security. We will overnight in Garmisch in the H+ Hotel Alpina Garmisch-Partenkirchen or similar (B/D)
Day 7: Friday, June 21, 2019: Zugspitze (Tallest Mountains in Germany) Tour
We will take a cog wheel train from Zugspitze station Garmisch-Partenkirchen to the top of the world. We’ll have a 360-degree panorama of over 400 mountain peaks in four countries. Our second overnight will be in Garmisch. (B)
Day 8: Saturday, June 22, 2019: Neuschwanstein, Prien
We will begin today with a visit to King Ludwig’s spectacular Neuschwanstein Castle, nestled in the Bavarian Alps. We’ll continue on to Prien where we’ll spend two overnights in the Hotel Bayerischer Hof or similar. (B/D)
Day 9: Sunday, June 23, 2019: Eagle’s Nest, Prien
This morning we will visit Berchtesgaden and board a local bus for a ride up the Kehlstein Strasse to Hitler’s Nest. There is a spectacular view into Austria. We can also enjoy coffee or an ice-cream in the cafe. We will return to Prien and go for an afternoon ride on Lake Prien to Herrenchiemsee Palace. (B)
Day 10: Monday, June 24, 2019: Munich
This morning we will drive to Munich and have a bus orientation tour, ending in Munich’s town square in time to watch the Glockenspiel go off. The afternoon will be at leisure, with an optional trip to Dachau. This evening we will finish our fun tour with a farewell Bavarian meal in a beer garden. We will overnight in Munich in the Hotel St. Paul or similar. (B/D)
Day 11: Tuesday, June 25, 2019: Return
We will leave this morning and drive to Munich Airport for our flight home. (B)
