The brass monument, from about 1502, is still there to see, including five sons and eight daughters at the foot of his first wife, and seven sons and five daughters beside his second wife. They are direct descendants of signers of the Magna Carta and the same family who were intimately involved in promoting development of the New World, during the time of Edward Howell’s emigration. The city of Saybrooke, Connecticut was named for the family. This is also the castle used in many films, including “Shakespeare in Love”, as the home of the heroine. We will then enjoy a visit at the Centre for Buckinghamshire Studies in Aylesbury, to view the registers of members of the Howell family, before taking the drive to Odell for a visit to All Saints Church, where Edward Howell married his first wife, Frances, on 7th April 1616. We will continue on to Raglan Castle, the grandest castle ever built by Welshmen. Before its deliberate destruction in the Civil War, it was magnificent country seat with stunning Renaissance gardens. We will return to Cardiff and the evening is at leisure. (B/L)
Day 9: Friday, June 14, 2024
We will depart Wales this morning and visit Great Chalfield Manor, once the home of John Eyre, brother of Anne Eyre, paternal grandmother of Edward Howell. This manor is now a National Trust property but is available today for a special tour. The main building, rebuilt by Thomas Tropnell between 1465-80, with England being torn apart by the War of the Roses, it was at that time something of a fort, with a defensible gatehouse encircled by a curtain wall and a moat. After several centuries of neglect, the house was restored by Sir Harold Brakspear in 1905-12 for the Fuller family. We will then take the short journey to Lacock village where we can purchase lunch. This was a prosperous and thriving town through its wool industry in the Middle Ages. It has been used as a location for many TV and film productions and includes Pride and Prejudice, Moll Flanders, Emma and Harry Potter films. We will then depart to Heathrow Airport, stopping along the way for a pub dinner in the King’s Head and on arrival check-in at the Heathrow hotel.
