Explore the epicenter of the Reformation and walk, sing, eat, and worship in the very places once frequented by Martin Luther. Luther rediscovered the Gospel in this land, and his influence quickly spread beyond Germany. Our visits to some of these cultural centers will expand your appreciation of diversity and historical interpretation. Magnificent castles, quaint villages, and unique concerts are sure to fill your senses and calm your spirit. It is our prayer that this tour will reinvigorate and inspire each traveler’s individual faith journey.
Your hosts, Woody and Linda Maxon are foodies and wine enthusiasts, so plan to sample a little wine, a little beer and some local delicacies along the way as we explore and enjoy together. They are saving this barrel for you!
Day 1: Thursday, November 2, 2017: Departure
We will depart the US today on our overnight flight to Berlin, Germany. (IF)
Day 2: Friday, November 3, 2017: Berlin
On arrival in Berlin, we will meet our tour director who will escort us throughout the tour. We will start our Reformation Tour with a panoramic sightseeing tour of the reunified German capital, highlighting the Reichstag (parliament building), the Kaiser Wilhelm Memorial Church, the refurbished city center and Gendarnmenmarkt. We will also see Alexanderplatz, the famous boulevard “Unter den Linden”, and the Berlin Cathedral. Our Welcome Dinner is in our hotel this evening. (IF/D)
Day 3: Saturday, November 4, 2017: Berlin, Wittenberg
Following breakfast we will continue our sightseeing in Berlin with a tour of Checkpoint Charlie and the World War II Memorial. Our visit to Berlin ends with a tour of the Bonhoeffer House. Originally built as a retirement home for his parents, Bonhoeffer stayed here whenever he was in Berlin. In the afternoon we will continue on to the Wittenberg area to check-in to our hotel. We dine in our hotel this evening. (B/D)
Day 4: Sunday, November 5, 2017: Wittenberg
After breakfast at the hotel, we will attend a morning church service (in German) in Castle Church Wittenberg. In the afternoon our expert local guide will take us on half-day walking tour including the Lutherhalle (Luther’s home), Town Church, and Castle Church. The rest of the day is at leisure. (B/D)
Day 5: Monday, November 6, 2017: Leipzig
This morning we will drive to Leipzig, one of Europe’s flourishing trade and commercial centers during the Middle Ages which became the center of resistance to Communist rule a quarter century ago. Luther was here more than once, but Leipzig is really the town of Johann Sebastian Bach and he served as cantor in St. Thomas Church for 27 years. Here we have the privilege of visiting the Nikolaikirche (St. Nicholas Church), the home of the faithful “Pray for Peace” Christians, and the powerful force that transformed Germany’s East and West. In 1989, thousands of East Germans gathered by candlelight in this church to form human rights and pro-democracy demonstrations that led to the destruction of the infamous Berlin Wall and the dissolution of East Germany. Another Leipzig highlight is our visit to Thomaskirche (St. Thomas Church), where Luther preached and Johann Sebastian Bach performed and directed the famous St. Thomas Boys choir. We will check-in to our hotel in Leipzig and dine in one of Luther’s favorite places, the Auerbachs Keller restaurant, which dates back to 1525. (B/D)
Day 6: Tuesday, November 7, 2017: Eisleben, Leipzig
We will begin the day with a trip to Eisleben, where Luther was born and also where he died. It is sometimes referred to as his Bethlehem and Jerusalem. We’ll visit both these homes with our guide, as well as St. Anne’s, an old miner’s church famous for the Biblical Scenes hewn in stone. We will also visit St. Peter and St. Paul Church where Luther was baptized. We will have a group lunch in Eisleben, then continue on to Mansfeld. Luther lived here with his family when he was young child, and he would have been familiar with the castle. In the evening we will have the option to attend a concert (details will be sent later). (B/ L)
Day 7: Wednesday, November 8, 2017: Leipzig, Dresden
On the way to Dresden we will take a tour through the scenic landscape known as “Saxon Switzerland”. We will visit the magnificent Schloss Wackerbarth, including wine-tasting and lunch at the Castle. After checking in to our hotel in Dresden, we have the option of attending Evensong (in German) at Germany’s largest Protestant church, the Frauenkirche, which has now been fully restored after being damaged during WWII. J.S. Bach was the first to play on the Silberman organ when the church was originally built. (B/L)
Day 8: Thursday, November 9, 2017: Dresden, Prague
This morning our local guide will take us on walking tour of the wonderful Baroque city of Dresden. Highlights include the magnificent palatial buildings around the Theaterplatz and the Brühl Terraces, and the many art treasures at the state museums. In the afternoon we will drive through the scenic landscapes of Saxon Switzerland to Prague. This evening we will have a lovely dinner cruise on the Vlatava River. (B/ D)
Day 9: Friday, November 10, 2017: Prague
Our expert local guide will join us this morning for a walking tour focused on Jan Hus, the leading personality of the Czech Reformation movement. We’ll visit Bethlehem Chapel where he preached, and see the Hus monument outside Týn Church. Hus was a contemporary of John Wycliffe and was heavily influenced by his writings. They both agreed that all Christians are members of Christ’s church and that Jesus is the head. We’ll also visit the Castle, which is a complex of palaces, courtyards, streets and churches including St. Vitus Cathedral, which took 600 years to complete. We will then take a stroll across Charles Bridge, past the famous statues. The afternoon is at leisure before a Czech folk dinner this evening. (B/D)
Day 10: Saturday, November 11, 2017: Prague, Vienna
We will drive to Vienna this morning, and meet our local guide for a tour of the city. Our afternoon tour will include viewing Vienna’s aristocratic palaces and baroque churches, St. Stephen’s Cathedral, and the Hofburg Palace, home of the Hapsburg emperors. We will check-in to the hotel and the evening is free to attend a concert (details and pricing will be available soon). (B/D)
Day 11: Sunday, November 12, 2017: Vienna
We will have a full day to enjoy Vienna at our leisure today. Options include attending a church service, taking a musical-themed tour, or individual sightseeing. (B)
Day 12: Monday, November 13, 2017: Bratislava, Vienna
Today we will have an optional day trip to Bratislava, Slovakia, to visit the Lutheran Seminary. We will also take a tour of the articular wooden churches that the Slovak / Zion Synod of the ELCA is working to preserve. These churches were constructed under severe restrictions. They weren’t allowed to use nails, there couldn’t be a foundation, they couldn’t face the main road, and they had to be built in under one year. We will return to Vienna for our Farewell Meal. (B/D)
Day 13: Tuesday, November 14, 2017: Return
This morning, we will transfer by motor coach to the Vienna Airport for our return flight. (B/IF)
