Oberammergau Passion Play
Please see our Coronavirus page for updates on the current situation.
Walt Wiley, President of Winning With Encouragement and his wife Patti, along with Pastor Jim Kallam, a WWE Board Member, and his wife Suzi will lead this trip that will highlight the Martin Luther Reformation sights and take in the once-in-a-decade Oberammergau Passion Play. The trip will be highlighted by teaching and learning, lots of fun and a lifetime of memory making.
The history of the Oberammergau Passion Play dates back to the middle of the Thirty Years War. In 1633, after months of suffering from the Bubonic Plague, the people of Oberammergau took a vow to perform the “Play of the Suffering, Dying and Resurrection of our Lord Jesus Christ” every ten years if they were spared. Miraculously from that point on they all survived and true to their promise, the first performance was in 1634. This simple performance was held in a meadow and acted by the villagers. After 1674 they decided to change the date, so as to fall every ten years beginning in 1680. The only time it was not performed, was during World War II. This time the play will open on May 16, 2020 and ends on October 4, 2020.
This tour not only includes fantastic seats for the Play, but also these highlights:

Day 4: Sunday, September 13, 2020: Wittenberg
This morning we will travel to Wittenberg and the morning will be at leisure to attend church (in German) in St. Mary’s or Castle Church, or have free time. In the afternoon our local guide will take us on a tour of Lutherstadt Wittenberg. It was here in 1517 that Martin Luther nailed his famous 95 Theses to the door of Castle Church (Schlosskirche). Although the original doors were destroyed in the Seven Years War, we can see Luther’s texts cast in bronze on the new doors. We will visit St. Mary’s Church where Luther regularly preached and visit the Old Latin School next door. Luther’s former home, the Lutherhalle, is now a Reformation Museum and we will see where he lived with his family, as well as some of Luther’s very own personal library, rare manuscripts, and early Bibles. We will end the tour with a time of fellowship with the Wittenberg English Ministry. The rest of the day will be free to explore independently. (B)
Day 5: Monday, September 14, 2020: Eisleben, Erfurt
This morning we will drive to Eisleben, where Luther was born and also where he died. It is sometimes referred to as his Bethlehem and Jerusalem. We will visit both of these homes with our guide, as well as St. Anne’s, an old miner’s church famous for the Biblical Scenes hewn in stone. We will also visit St. Peter and St. Paul Church where Luther was baptized, and St. Andrews, where he preached his last sermon. In the afternoon, we will continue on to Erfurt. Our local guide will take us on a tour including St. Mary’s Cathedral, Church of St. Severus, and the famous Merchant’s Bridge. We will also tour the Augustinian Monastery where Luther became a monk on July 17, 1505. We will be able to see his monastic quarters, including one cell furnished to look as it would have when he lived there. (B/D)
Day 6: Tuesday, September 15, 2020: Eisenach, Erfurt
Today’s day trip will be to nearby Eisenach. In 1521, while fleeing from the wrath of the Pope, Luther took refuge in the Wartburg Castle after a fake kidnapping staged by his friend and protector, Frederick the Wise. We will tour the Wartburg and see where Luther finished translating the New Testament into German in just eleven weeks. In the afternoon, we will have free time in Eisenach. Attractions will include the Luther House, St. George’s Church and the Bach House. (B)
Day 7: Wednesday, September 16, 2020: Augsburg, Oberammergau
After an early breakfast this morning we will travel to Augsburg, another German Reformation city. We will learn about the Augsburg Confession as we tour St. Anne’s Church. After a walking tour of key sites, we will journey on to Bavaria, to tour the Wieskirche, a UNESCO World Heritage site with incredible Rococo art. We will finish our day with our arrival in Oberammergau, home to the world-famous Passion Play. We will check into our hotel and have a delicious dinner. (B/D)
Day 8: Thursday, September 17: Oberammergau
The morning will be free to stroll around Oberammergau before eating lunch and heading to the Passion Play. The seven-hour performance is truly a moving experience as we witness the passion of Jesus, recalling how He gave His life so that we might be forgiven. Gathered together with Christians from around the globe, this once-a-decade play is an unforgettable experience. (B/L/D)
