Strasbourg, as a free imperial town, was a beacon for Protestantism right from the 16th century. During his time in Strasbourg, Calvin was not attached to one particular church, but held his office successively in various local churches. Calvin learned how to organize a church and reform a city from Martin Bucer, one of the more underappreciated reformers of the era. Strasbourg is also home to Katharina Schütz-Zell, a leading reformer who directed her work and writings towards the women of the era. (B/D)
