The Cullinane family has invited friends and family from Texas to join them in Europe in 2020. The tour is designed to be a relaxed and fun trip, based around the Oberammergau Passion Play, which has been performed in a small Bavarian village approximately every 10 years since 1634.
Other highlights of the trip include:
[printfriendly]Key: IF = In Flight Meals, B = Breakfast, L = Lunch, D = Dinner
Day 1: Saturday, July 11, 2020: Arrival in Munich
Welcome to Germany! On arrival in Munich, travelers will transfer to the Maritim Hotel, either by private driver (from the airport) or by taxi. The afternoon will be at leisure, to shop, walk around the city, take a bike ride, or explore independently. Click here for some ideas for activities in and around Munich. We will dine together this evening in a Bavarian beer garden. (IF/D)
Day 2: Sunday, July 12, 2020: Munich
After breakfast we will have a guided tour with a local guide, who will take us on a tour of the city, including seeing the cathedral, and the Glockenspiel in Marienplatz. We will also view the Olympic Stadium, Nymphemburg Castle, the New and Old Pinakothek art museums and the Deutsches Museum. In the afternoon we can use hop-on, hop-off tickets to explore further, including the BMW factory. (B)
Day 3: Monday, July 13, 2020: Neuschwanstein, Oberammergau
Our driver will pick us up at the hotel this morning and drive us to the magnificent fairytale Neuschwanstein Castle, the inspiration for the Disney Palace. This castle was built by King Ludwig II of Bavaria in the 19th century and is now one of the most visited tourist destinations in Europe. We will also visit Linderhof Palace and Gardens, before checking into our hotel in the Oberammergau area. Meals are included in the Oberammergau package. (B/D)
Day 4: Tuesday, July 14, 2020: Oberammergau
The morning will be at leisure, with time to visit the wood-carvers, painters, well-know Christmas shops, and other shops and galleries in town, before having lunch and heading to the world-famous Passion Play. The performance is truly a moving experience as we witness the passion of Jesus, recalling how He gave His life so that we might be forgiven. Gathered together with Christians from around the globe, this once-a-decade play is an unforgettable experience. The history of the Oberammergau Passion Play dates back the the 1600s. After months of suffering from the Bubonic Plague, the people of Oberammergau took a vow to perform the Passion Play every ten years if they were spared. Miraculously from that point on they all survived and true to their promise, the first performance was in 1634. The only time it was not performed was during World War II. All the performers were either born in the town or have resided there for over 20 years. We will watch the performance of the play, with excellent, pre-reserved seats. (B/L/D)
Day 5: Wednesday, July 15, 2020: Mittenwald
Our driver will pick us up at the hotel and drive us to Mittenwald, one of the most beautiful towns in the Alpine region. It was an important stop on the trading route to Venice, but has remained largely unaltered since the Middle Ages, so it’s a charming place to visit. We can hike directly from the village or take the gondola to the Karwendel Mountain Station. This is the starting point for numerous hiking and climbing routes. We will overnight in Mittenwald. (B)
Day 6: Thursday, July 16, 2020: Venice
Our driver will pick us up at the hotel and drive us down to Venice. The journey will take around 5 hours, plus stops along the way. When we get to Venice, we will transfer to our hotel by water taxi. The evening will be at leisure to explore Venice by night. (B)
Day 7: Friday, July 17, 2020: Venice
We will have a full day to explore Venice, beginning with a walking tour with a local expert guide. They will take us into the Doge’s Palace, the Bell Tower and the impressive St. Mark’s Cathedral, Mark’s Square and the Basilica, with skip-the-line access. The afternoon is at leisure, with options including a cruise on the Grand Canal, a gondola ride, shopping in the famous market area around the Rialto Bridge, coffee at St. Mark’s Square, watching glass blowers, etc. (B)
Day 8: Saturday, July 18, 2020: Return
We will leave this morning and transfer to the Venice Airport for our flight home, or the train station if continuing on to Rome or other European destinations. (B)
