The main markets are held at the Old Town Square and Wenceslas Square (5 minutes walk from each other). Day 4: Thursday, December 2, 2021: Prague, Cesky Krumlov, Vienna
Today we will travel to Cesky Krumlov and take a walking tour of the city. We will enjoy lunch together and then spend time wandering through the Christmas markets. In the afternoon, we will meet our guide and board our bus which will take us to Vienna, Austria’s capital, which spreads out along both sides of the Danube. The city is a smorgasbord of Baroque with a dash of Art Nouveau. Circling the old town (or Innere Stadt) is the striking revivalist architecture of the Ringstrasse, Vienna’s main boulevard. These buildings range from the charming Opera House to the monumental Natural History Museum. Nestled throughout the city are the graceful art-nouveau buildings of turn-of-the century architects Otto Wagner and Adolf Loos. The buildings are one of the many remnants of the artistic and intellectual flowering that took place in Vienna at the turn of the century. Of course, the buildings and the city’s history are only a backdrop for the daily culture that can still be found in the concert halls, opera houses, and cafes. Upon arrival, we will check in to our hotel, then have dinner at a local restaurant. (B/L/D)
Day 5: Friday, December 3, 2021: Vienna
This morning we will have a guided walking tour of Vienna. The unique Christmas markets (Christkindlmarkt, sometimes called Weihnachtsmarkt or Adventmarkt) are very popular in Vienna during the advent season. Most of these fairs open up mid-November and last until Christmas. These romantic street markets enjoy a long tradition, with a history in Austria (as well as the rest of German speaking Europe) dating back to the Middle Ages. The markets are mostly located in larger squares and pedestrian zones in Vienna and sell food, drinks and seasonal items from open-air stalls. We will have lunch together and the rest of the day will be at leisure. In the evening, we will visit Schönbrunn for an evening concert of classical music at the Schönbrunn Palace Orangery (subject to availability). We will overnight in Vienna. (B/L)
Day 6: Saturday, December 4, 2021: Vienna, Schloss Hof, Bratislava, Budapest
This morning we will meet our local guide who will take us for a visit to Schloss Hof Castle, which was built starting in the late 1720s as an impressive country home and hunting lodge for Prince Eugene of Savoy. By 1730 most of the work was completed and resulted in one of the most impressive baroque total pieces of art. After our tour, we will have some free time to visit the Christmas markets in the area, then we will continue on to Bratislava. We will have lunch together and then take a walking tour of the city. Bratislava’s location on the banks of the River Danube and at the crossroads of ancient trading routes right at the heart of Europe predestined it to become a meeting point of various cultures. We will spend time in the Christmas markets before continuing on to Budapest, where we will check in and have dinner in our hotel. (B/L/D)
Day 7: Sunday, December 5, 2021: Budapest
After breakfast, we will have a city tour of Budapest, where we will get acquainted with the Pearl of the Danube. In Pest, we will drive along the main avenues, passing by Parliament and the Opera House. We will also stop at Heroes’ Square. The rest of the afternoon will be at leisure to visit the Christmas markets. We will have a farewell dinner in a traditional Hungarian restaurant with live Gypsy music. We will overnight in Budapest. (B/D)
Day 8: Monday, December 6, 2021: Return
This morning we will transfer to the Budapest airport for our return flights. (B/IF)
