From there, we take a small passenger ferry across to Iona. Iona Abbey was founded in 563 by St. Columba (521-97) and was a leading center for Christian scholarship throughout Europe. After visiting the Abbey and Visitor Center, we will return to the mainland and dine in our hotel (B/D)
Day 5: Saturday, June 10, 2017: Stirling, Edinburgh
After our delicious Scottish breakfast, we will leave the Highlands and tour the magnificent Stirling Castle, where James VI was educated by Scottish Reformer George Buchanan. Day 6: Sunday, June 11, 2017: Edinburgh
We will attend the 10 AM morning service at St. Giles Cathedral, Also known as the High Kirk of Edinburgh, it is the Mother Church of Presbyterianism and contains the Chapel of the Order of the Thistle (Scotland’s chivalric company of knights chosen by The Queen.) Day 7: Monday, June 12, 2017: St. Andrews, Edinburgh
Today’s day trip is to St. Andrews, a spiritual center in Scotland for centuries. During the Reformation, St. Andrews University was third in significance after Oxford and Cambridge. In the now ruined castle, we will see the Bottle Dungeon where George Wishart was imprisoned before being burned at the stake, and pause at his martyrdom site, also remembering fellow martyr Patrick Hamilton. St. Andrews Cathedral was once the largest church in Scotland, but fell into ruin after John Knox’s sermon, which was inspired by Wishart’s martyrdom. We’ll see a monument to Robert the Bruce, the first king to unite the Scottish people and the wide sandy beach made famous in the film Chariots of Fire. Scotland is famous for its whisky and we will take a tour of Kingsbarns Distillery, with the opportunity to taste a sample. We will dine in a local restaurant this evening. (B/D)

We will end with Evensong at the Minster, which is the biggest medieval church in England and has an impressive collection of medieval stained glass, including a sixteenth century rose window. The term “Minster” usually refers to a church in a monastery, but this cathedral was never part of a monastic institution, so doesn’t have cloisters. We will dine in our hotel this evening. (B/D)
Day 9: Wednesday, June 14, 2017: Bedford, Oxford
We will set off early today and visit Bedford where we will learn more about John Bunyan, the author of Pilgrim’s Progress, the Christian allegory that is considered to be the most widespread book of all time, second only to the Bible. Originally a poor, barely literate tinker, he became a popular preacher and author. Pilgrim’s Progress was written while he was imprisoned for 12 years for preaching without a license from the Church of England. Just outside Oxford we will visit C.S. Lewis’ home, the Kiln’s (inside visit subject to availability) and Trinity Church, Headington Quarry. We will dine in our hotel in Oxford. (B/D)

Other well-known students included Bible translator William Tyndale and the great revivalist preacher George Whitefield. We will have a walking orientation tour including Christ Church College Cathedral, and the Martyr Memorial. The afternoon is free to shop, tour one of Oxford’s many museums, or simply relax.
