Today we will enjoy some of the highlights of Bavaria, including a guided tour of the spectacular Neuschwanstein Castle built for King Ludwig II. It’s one of the most photographed castles in Europe. In the afternoon we will return to the village of Oberammergau and have a guided tour of the famous Passion Play theater, which has been performed every ten years, since the Middle Ages. The next performance is in 2030. The rest of the day is at leisure. Oberammergau is famous for woodcarving and we can arrange for a woodworking lesson to create a Christmas ornament, for a small extra charge. We will dine at our hotel this evening. (B/D)
Day 4: Tuesday: Munich, Prague
This morning we will head to Munich for a drive-by orientation tour, including some stops for photos. Munich’s highlights include the Frauenkirche and the glockenspiel in the main square. After time for lunch, we will board our bus for our drive to Prague, the capital of the Czech Republic. We will check-in to our centrally-located hotel and enjoy a delicious meal. (B/D)
Day 5: Wednesday: Prague
Prague is a wonderful city filled with history and our expert local guide will take us on a walking tour through the old town. We will hear about Jan Hus, King Wenceslas and other notable historical figures. A highlight will be a tour of the magnificent castle. The rest of the day is free to explore independently. There is an optional dinner cruise this evening. (B)
Day 6: Thursday: Prague, Dresden, Erfurt
Today’s highlight will be a cruise from the German/Czech border to Dresden on a river boat. We will sail up the Elbe through a scenic region known as “Saxon Switzerland”. This area is a National Park containing the Elbe Sandstone Mountains. Our bus will pick us up again in Dresden to continue our journey to Erfurt. We will stay in the Augustinian Monastery in Erfurt for two nights. We will dine in the monastery this evening, followed by a devotional time in the chapel. (B/D)
Day 7: Friday: Eisenach, Erfurt
We will begin today with a guided walking tour of Erfurt, including the Luther exhibit in the monastery. In the afternoon we will drive to nearby Eisenach for a guided visit of Wartburg Castle, where Luther translated the New Testament into German. We will see the very room and some of Luther’s own manuscripts. The rest of the day is at leisure to either spend time at the Bach Museum in Eisenach, or return to Erfurt. (B)
Day 8: Saturday: Eisleben, Wittenberg
This morning we will continue to the little city of Eisleben, which is sometimes referred to as Luther’s Bethlehem and Jerusalem. Our first port of call will be the house where little Martin was born on November 10, 1483. The next day he was baptized in the nearby church of St. Petri-Pauli. This old gothic church has currently been beautifully restored to celebrate baptism as a Christian institution, in view of the big Luther celebrations in 2017. By some strange twist of fate Martin returned to Eisleben as an old man, his purpose being to settle a dispute within the ruling family of the area. After three weeks he finally succeeded, but sadly one day later, on February 18, 1546, he died. We will see the museum devoted to his memory and take a look around the church where he gave his last sermon. We will then visit a regional vineyard, where we will have the opportunity to sample local wines from the Saale-Unstrut region. We will then check-in to our hotel in Wittenberg. We have the option for fellowship this evening with the Wittenberg English Ministry. (B)
Day 9: Sunday: Wittenberg
This morning is free, with the option of attending a church service (in German). In the afternoon our local guide will take us to where Martin Luther nailed his famous 95 Theses to the door of the Schlosskirche (Castle Church) in 1517. Although the original door was destroyed in a fire, the replica has all 95 Theses in bronze, which is magnificent. We will see the Cranach Altar in the Stadtkirche, then tour the Lutherhalle (Luther House) Museum, where Luther lived for 35 years. It was here that he had his pivotal “Tower Experience” while reading Romans 1:17. The rest of the afternoon is free, with coupons for free admission to the Melanchthon Museum, Cranach Museum, and the exhibition of modern Christian art etc. Tonight’s treat is a special Luther-era meal. (B/D)
Day 10: Monday: Berlin
When we arrive in Berlin, our local city guide will board the bus and take us on a sightseeing overview tour of this once-divided metropolis. We will view the elegant Kurfürstendamm, known locally as the Ku’damm, one of the most famous avenues in Berlin. It is shaped by the Kaiser Memorial Church with its bomb-damaged tower. We will also see the restored Reichstag, seat of the German parliament, and pause for a picture stop at the monumental Brandenburg Gate. We will visit the sobering Jewish Holocaust Memorial, and drive by the Victory Column in the vast Tiergarten Park. We will also drive along Unter den Linden Boulevard, see the State Opera House, touch the Berlin Wall and pass through Checkpoint Charlie, and more. After we have checked into our hotel, the afternoon is at leisure, before our farewell meal. (B/D)
Day 11: Tuesday: Return
We will transfer to Berlin airport for our morning flights back to the USA. (B/IF)
