Day 3: Wednesday, July 6, 2022: Alnwick Castle, Beamish
After a leisurely breakfast, we will depart from Scotland and drive to Alnwick Castle and Gardens. This was known as Brancaster Castle in two Christmas specials, as well as being used for Harry Potter movies. Our hotel this evening, the Beamish House Hotel, was used as a filming location in the Downton movie. This former manor house, dating back to the 13th century, is in a delightful woodland setting, with a garden center on the grounds. We will dine in our hotel. (B/D)
Day 4: Thursday, July 7, 2022: Beamish Open Air Museum, York
This morning we will have the opportunity to walk through the Beamish Open Air Museum, which was used as a film set for the movie, particularly Branson’s garage and Mr Bakewell’s grocery store. We can take a tram ride back in time and experience the sights, sounds, smells and delicious tastes of the past. In the afternoon, we will have a relaxing visit to Crook Hall, a 13th century Grade I listed Medieval hall in Durham City, described in the Sunday Telegraph as ‘stunning.’ The English themed gardens include a maze, a Shakespeare garden, and a Secret Walled garden. We will continue on to York, where we will stay for 3 nights. We will dine in our hotel this evening. (B/D)
Day 5: Friday, July 8, 2022: Harewood House, York
This morning we will visit Harewood House, a stately home set in parkland, stars as itself in the new movie, due to its royal connections. This was the real-life home of Princess Mary, the daughter of George V and Queen Mary. Her personal archive has been made public for the first time and we will be able to see letters, diaries, clothing, and personal items. The family called her their “darling little butterfly” and her parents let her know in their letters how much they missed her and her brothers, who went on to be Edward VIII and George VI. Our afternoon guided tour will include York Minster, the medieval street known as the Shambles, and the Roman wall surrounding the city. We will end the tour with a special Afternoon Tea. (B/AT)
Day 6: Saturday, July 9, 2022: North Yorks Railway, York
Today we will have the unique experience of traveling on a steam train on the North York Moors Railway, which was used for the opening shots of the new movie. Pickering Station, where we will board our train, was transformed into King’s Cross Station. We will travel in style up to Grosmont and return to Pickering, with lunch on board the train. The rest of the day will be at leisure to enjoy York. York Minster has an evening service or Evensong at 5:30 PM. (B/L)
Day 7: Sunday, July 10, 2022: Wentworth Woodhouse, Oxford
Wentworth Woodhouse is a stunning stately home in South Yorkshire, that has the longest façade of any country house in England. In the new movie, it’s the setting for the ballroom scene. The house was built for the 1st Marquess of Rockingham, Thomas Wentworth, in the early 18th century. The interiors at Wentworth are some of the finest of the Georgian era and we will have a private guided tour. We will have lunch in a private room, followed by free time to explore the grounds. We will then continue on to Oxford, where we will check in to the Randolph Hotel. The evening will be at leisure. (B/L)
Day 8: Monday, July 11, 2022: Cotswolds, Oxford
The honey-colored stone and charming villages make the Cotswolds one of the most attractive areas of England. We will visit the village of Bampton, which was used to film Downton Village. The town library was transformed into the cottage hospital. St. Mary’s Church was used in several episodes of the drama. We will have lunch at Cogges Manor Farm, where young Marigold spent her early childhood. The afternoon will be at leisure in Oxford and we will dine together this evening in the hotel. (B/L/D)
Day 9: Tuesday, July 12, 2022: Lacock, Highclere Castle, London
This morning we’ll explore the delightful village of Lacock, which was used for the fabulous street parade in the movie. The charming village of Lacock is owned by the National Trust, and is frequently used for period dramas. Today’s highlight will be a tour of Highclere Castle, which is the filming location for the fictional Downton Abbey. We will have a tour of the house and time to explore the spacious grounds.
