Silent Night Chapel Salzburg Rothenburg Bamberg Erfurt Christmas Market Annaberg-Buchholz in the Ore Mountains Stollen Prague
On Christmas Eve 1818, “Silent Night” was performed for the first time, in the small village of Oberndorf near Salzburg. As this is the 200th anniversary of its first performance, it’s the perfect time for a Christmas tour. We’ve included some of the very best European markets in Austria, Germany, and the Czech Republic, so you can buy hand-crafted items, enjoy a warm glass of mulled wine (Glühwein), and sample some delicious stollen. As a special treat, we have tickets to the famous Advent Carol Service in Salzburg, featuring over 150 singers, musicians, and actors, who will perform Christmas carols and Alpine music.
Your tour host is Taree McGee, graduate from McKendree University. Since retiring from the English Department at Belleville East High School, Taree frequently leads tours with the Professional Tour Guides of St. Louis. She has hosted several European tours for Reformation Tours to England, France, and Italy. She is an avid supporter and guide for the Nine Network (PBS), and is a member of local St. Louis organizations including Forest Park Forever, Missouri Botanical Gardens, and the St. Louis Art Museum.

We will have time to visit the Christmas Market before heading to the Silent Night Chapel in Oberndorf, Austria. The original poem was written by a priest from Salzburg, called Joseph Mohr. He asked Franz Xaver Gruber to compose the music, so that it could be used for the Christmas Eve service. It’s such a popular carol that UNESCO declared “Silent Night” part of our “intangible cultural heritage.”
