Lutherhalle Museum Wartburg Castle Augustinian Monastery Medieval Rothenburg Oberammergau Munich Salzburg
Wittenberg
We are extending an invitation to members of Concordia, their family and friends to join Pastor David and Jeanette Meggers on a trip to Germany in September 2018. The itinerary will include extended time in Luther towns (Wittenberg, Erfurt, Eisenach and Eisleben) and then on to Bavaria (Rothenberg, Oberammergau, Salzburg and Munchen). Besides a guided tour at each town we have a schedule that will allow for personal time to explore these sites and soak up the culture. The intention is to make the trip pleasurable and memorable. For example in Wittenberg we will visit the Old Latin School and the activities of the Wittenberg Project and attend church service in the Castle Church as part of celebrating the 500th anniversary of the Reformation (albeit a year later!). This is an opportunity to get a deeper understanding of Martin Luther and the Reformation.

After breakfast at the hotel, we will have a special service led by Dr. Meggers in the Old Latin School. In the afternoon our expert local guide will take us on half-day walking tour including the Lutherhalle (Luther’s home), Town Church, and Castle Church. Although the original door was destroyed in a fire, the replica has all 95 Theses magnificently displayed in bronze. We’ll dine in the Brauhaus this evening and some local pastors will join us. (B/D)
Day 5: Monday, October 1, 2018: Eisleben, Erfurt
We will begin the day with a trip to Eisleben, where Luther was born and also where he died. It is sometimes referred to as his Bethlehem and Jerusalem. We’ll visit both these homes with our guide, as well as St. Anne’s, an old miner’s church famous for the Biblical Scenes hewn in stone. We will also visit St. Peter and St. Paul Church where Luther was baptized. Then we will drive through the Thuringian countryside to Erfurt and check-in to our hotel. We have time to stroll through the narrow streets of the old town and walk across the famous Krämer Bridge. We will enjoy a group meal at a Lutherkeller Restaurant this evening. (B/D)
Day 6: Tuesday, October 2, 2018: Erfurt
We will start our full day in Erfurt with a walking tour led by a local expert guide. We will visit St. Mary’s Cathedral where Luther celebrated his first mass and the delightful Merchant’s Bridge. Following in Luther’s footsteps, we will also visit the Augustinian Monastery. While we are there, we will see the “Luther Cell” and exhibition. At noon, we will have a special service in the Monastery chapel with communion, led by Dr. Meggers. We have the opportunity to dine independently at a restaurant of our choice this evening. (B)
Day 7: Wednesday, October 3, 2018: Eisenach, Rothenburg
This morning we’ll tour the imposing Wartburg Castle, where Luther took refuge after a fake kidnapping staged by his friend and protector, Frederick the Wise. This is where Luther translated the New Testament into German in just 11 weeks! After our tour, we continue on to Rothenburg, a well-preserved medieval city, with its ramparts, a city gate, and town hall. Perhaps the most famous town on the “Romantic Road”, Rothenburg is indeed a jewel. We will enjoy a meal together at our hotel in this wonderful city, followed by the option of joining the Night Watchman’s tour. (B/D)
Day 8: Thursday, October 4, 2018: Romantic Road, Oberammergau
We will begin the day with some free time to explore this storybook town. Then we will board the coach and drive the Romantic Road past the medieval towns of Dinkelsbühl and Nördlingen to southern Bavaria. The Thirty Years’ War and the plague of 1632 threatened to wipe out the local population of Oberammergau. The survivors made a pledge that they would perform a passion play every 10 years and no further deaths occurred. We will dine in our hotel this evening. (B/D)
Day 9: Friday, October 5, 2018: Bavarian Alps and Castles, Oberammergau
Today we will enjoy some of the highlights of Bavaria, including a tour of Linderhof Castle and the spectacular Neuschwanstein Castle. In Salzburg’s Baroque Old Town, we will visit the beautiful cathedral and festival quarter. This evening we will attend a classical music concert inside Schloss Mirabell’s breathtaking Marble Hall. (B/D)
