In 2017, the world celebrates the 500th Anniversary of the Protestant Reformation. Your tour hosts are Professor Kyle and Colleen Jantzen, Professor of History and Program Chair (
The Ambrose Reformation 500 Tour will explore and celebrate the German and Swiss Reformations. We will begin with the life and ideas of the German reformer Martin Luther, whose protest against church abuses five centuries ago launched a global reform movement that transformed Christianity. We will consider Luther’s theology of salvation by faith and grace, his insistence on the priesthood of all believers, and his conviction about the power of Scripture to change lives. Afterwards, we will continue to the Swiss and South German reformation movements, inspired by Ulrich Zwingli of Zurich and refined by John Calvin of Geneva, the city that grew into the spiritual center of Reformed Christianity. Students may earn three credits in History or Theology on this study trip.

Day 1: Wednesday, July 26, 2017: Overnight Flight to Berlin, Germany
Our journey begins with an overnight flight to Berlin. Pre-tour nights can be arranged. (IF)
Day 2: Thursday, July 27, 2017: Berlin
When we arrive in Berlin, we will transfer to our centrally-located hotel and meet our tour leaders, Kyle Jantzen and Bernie Van de Walle. The afternoon is at leisure to relax or accompany Kyle and Bernie on a stroll around Berlin. We will enjoy a welcome dinner at our hotel tonight. (IF/D)
Day 3: Friday, July 28, 2017: Berlin
In the morning we will have a guided tour of Berlin with a focus on the Reformation. The afternoon is at leisure to explore independently. We will meet back at our hotel for our evening meal. (B/D)
Day 4: Saturday, July 29, 2017: Wittenberg
We will arrive in Wittenberg by noon and have lunch in the Brauhaus Restaurant, next to the Market Square. In the afternoon our guided tour will include the Town Church of St. Mary’s, Castle Church and the Cranach courtyard. The afternoon is free to explore the town and we will meet up again late afternoon for coffee and cake. At 5 pm we will join other believers for the Wittenberg English Ministry Saturday service. Day 5: Sunday, July 30, 2017: Wittenberg
We attend worship at the Castle Church this morning (service in German). In the afternoon we will spend independent time in the Lutherhalle museum. In the early evening we will meet up again to hear Kyle and Bernie’s lecture on the history of the Reformation. (B/D)
Day 6: Monday, July 31, 2017: Erfurt
After breakfast, we will travel to Erfurt, where we will have free time for lunch and a stroll around this delightful medieval town. Our local guide will take us on a tour including St. Mary’s Cathedral, St. Severin’s Church and the famous Merchant’s Bridge. The afternoon is at leisure. This evening we will dine in the “Luther Kellar” restaurant with a traditional meal from his time. (B/D)
Day 7: Tuesday, August 1, 2017: Erfurt
We will begin our day at the Augustinian Monastery where Luther became a monk on July 17, 1505. We will be able to see his monastic quarters, including one cell furnished to look as it would have done when he lived there. Kyle and Bernie will present a lecture on the Reformation at the end of the tour. The rest of the day is at leisure. (B)
Day 8: Wednesday, August 2, 2017: Eisenach, Marburg
After breakfast we will drive to nearby Eisenach, for a tour of Wartburg Castle where Luther was hidden and protected by friends under an alias and where he translated the New Testament into common German language. Then we continue on to Marburg. (B/D)
Day 9: Thursday, August 3, 2017: Marburg
Through its 800 year history, Marburg has had many famous residents and visitors, among whom are Elizabeth of Thuringia, Martin Luther, and the Grimm Brothers. Today we focus on the City of Marburg for a tour of the Old City with the St. Elizabeth Church, the Marburg Castle, and the Protestant University. (B/D)
Day 10: Friday, August 4, 2017: Mainz, Heidelberg
Our morning begins with a visit to Mainz to focus on Bible printing history and the contribution of Johann Gutenberg, who developed moveable type. We will be amazed as we view original copies of the Bible in the Gutenberg Museum. We will also view Mainz Cathedral, dating back to 975. We will continue on to Heidelberg and dine in our hotel. Day 11: Saturday, August 5, 2017: Heidelberg, Worms
We will take a day trip to Worms today, where we will see the amazing Cathedral, followed by the site of Luther’s Worms Debates (Diet of Worms), now a park, with a plaque commemorating Luther’s brave stand for faith and truth. We’ll have a photo stop at the stunning Reformation Monument. Kyle and Bernie will present a lecture on the Reformation this afternoon. We will return to Heidelberg and the evening is at leisure. (B)
Day 12: Sunday, August 6, 2017: Strasbourg, Zurich
We will take a morning trip into France to visit Strasbourg, referred to as the “City of Hope” and “Refuge of the Righteous” by the Anabaptists. This is where John Calvin wrote his famous books on systematic theology and where Martin Bucer, another Reformation leader, helped bring in the Reformation. We will have a stroll around the city center and view the Cathedral of Strasbourg, St. Thomas’s Church, and the charming “La Petite France” quarter. We will then drive through Germany to Switzerland and check-in to the Bibelheim Maennedorf conference center if that’s possible. Kyle and Berlin will present a lecture on the Reformation today. (B/D)
Day 13: Monday, August 7, 2017: Zurich
On our day trip to Zurich, we will learn about Zwingli and the Anabaptists on a tour of the key Reformation sites. We will tour the Grossmünster, the Helferei (where Zwingli lived) and see the Zwingli Statue. After a stroll through the historic Auld Stadt (old city) we will return to the conference center for dinner. (B/D)
Day 14: Tuesday, August 8, 2017: Geneva
Our last city on the tour is Geneva, where Calvin, Knox, Farel and others brought Christ’s teachings to eager listeners. Our tour will begin at the impressive Reformation Monument. Four statues of four Reformation leaders stand as sentinels to truth and courage inspired by godly faith. We will see Calvin’s church, the Auditoire de Calvin, (Calvin’s Academy, also known as The Protestant Lecture Hall), where the inspired theologian himself taught. Next door is St. Pierre’s Cathedral, where John Calvin preached. We can see his chair and a restored section decorated as it would have been before Calvin. Our final stop is an audio guide tour through the incredible Reformation Museum. Below the museum and the Cathedral, we can see the ruins of a Roman sanctuary, a 4th century basilica, and a 6th century church. We have a free time this afternoon to experience these key sites before we dine at a local restaurant this evening for our farewell meal. (B/D)
Day 15: Wednesday, August 9, 2017: Geneva
We have a full day of leisure in Geneva to shop, tour and relax. Kyle and Bernie will present a final lecture at the Farewell Meal. (B/D)
Day 16: Thursday, August 10, 2017: Return
Transfers to the airport are provided and assistance is available for post-tours. (B)

You have the option to upgrade to the Total Travel Protection Plan to receive full coverage. The price depends on the total land and air cost of the tour.
The Travel Protection Plan covers you while you are on tour (not before). It includes medical and evacuation coverage, missed travel connections, trip delay, baggage delays, and lost luggage.

You can upgrade to the Total Travel Protection plan, by adding Trip Cancellation coverage. This is valid from the time of purchase until the tour begins. E-mail us to add the upgraded insurance, or request the upgrade when you sign-up for the tour.
Regardless of reason, cancellations are costly. To offset these costs the following fees will apply, plus any non-recoverable expenses to our suppliers:
From time of deposit to until 100 days before departure: $100
From 99-15 days prior to departure: $350 plus any non refundable deposits
14 days or less prior to departure: No refund– Cancellation charges also apply to additional accommodation reserved prior to and after the tour.
– Cancellations must be received in writing by 5:00 p.m. central time on the last business day of the applicable time period.
– For flight changes or cancellations, revision fees and/or airline cancellation charges will apply.
– Roommates canceling can result in a single supplement charge for the roommate. The Participant who cancels will be responsible for that charge if a substitute roommate cannot be found.
– Trip Cancellation and Interruption Insurance is strongly recommended.
